But it is quite dangerous as well if it is not stored properly.

Owning a firearm is quite dangerous if they are not stored properly. Such risks and dangers and the responsibility of owning a firearm is left to us as owners. In most cases, it is the children and teenagers who are hurt or the ones ending up as innocent victims. Mainly it is because of their curiosity and lack of wisdom to differentiate between the real gun and a toy gun.

If you want to keep a gun in your home, it is important that you know about the risks and dangers. Here are the 7 basic safety tips a gun owner should follow in order to keep their children safe and out of danger:

  1. Guns should not be loaded when it is in your home. Make sure that your firearms like shotguns are stored away. The shotguns and ammo should also be stored separately.
  2. Make sure that the firearm is locked with a trigger lock or stored in a safe and locked box. This will prevent guns from accidental access as well as theft.
  3. Educate your children about proper use and handling of firearms. Tell them how dangerous it can be and should never be played with.
  4. Be familiar with who your child is playing with. You may be so careful and safe with your guns at home but when he plays with someone who has unsafe guns around their home, it is still like turning him over to danger.
  5. Keep in mind that children are naturally curious and has the tendency to listen to the encouragement of their friends than what their parents had firmly told them. Make sure that your gun is being kept away from the access of your children.
  6. If there is really a need to keep the pistols in the bedroom, be sure that a secure vault is used. There are vaults with biometric or digital access available now in the market. This assures that only gun owners have quick and easy access to his guns.
  7. If there is a depressed or suicidal member of the family living with you, it is best that you don’t keep any firearms in the house at all.
